バーミンガム便り「バーミンガムってどんな街」
From Birmingham --- A Primer on B'ham

というわけで、 6月末に日本を発った僕は、 めでたく7月1日には英国・バーミンガム入りすることができた。

だが、 そのバーミンガムというのはどんなところか、 事前に情報をほとんど仕入れずにこちらに来てしまった。 何しろ、 叔母が開いてくれた親類だけの壮行会で大ウソ （ロンドン・バーミンガム間は列車で1時間・110km程度） をついてしまったくらいである （実際は2時間・180km）。

そこで、 当地到着後に得た知識をもとに、 この街のことを簡単にご紹介しようと思う。

名前の由来・歴史など

現在も口語では Brum ということがある。 よくバスの車体広告に Best xxx in Brum とか書いてあるし、 バーミンガムのひとやバーミンガム訛りのことを、 これの派生語で Brummie, Brummy などといったりもするらしい。 西隣にある街 West Bromwich の Bromwich も、 意味的には Birmingham と同一であるようだ。

Brummie を辞書でひいたらオーストラリアでの用法として 「派手な模造品の」 という語義が出てきた。 関連する言葉として brummagem というのがあり、 意味は 「これみよがしの」 「派手だが価値のない」 「偽の」 「いかさま」 だそうだ。 なんでもその昔、 贋金や紛い物がこの辺でつくられていたからなのだそうだが。

こういう語義からもある程度想像されるとおり、 街が発展したのは比較的最近、 産業革命以後のことである。 1084年の 「土地台帳」 （Doomsday Book, ウィリアム1世の命により作成され、 全イングランドの土地調査・ 資産価値・ 所有者などが記載されている） に、 Bermingeham という名前で記載があるが、 人口わずかに60、 土地建物の価格はぜんぶひっくるめても20台という寒村だったらしい。 16世紀に入っても Birmingham Manor （バーミンガム荘園） などと呼ばれている。

1620年ころ、 近くの街 Halesowen のあたりで、 Dud Dudley によってコークスによる製鉄が開始された。 Coalbrookdale (ここもわりとご近所。Ironbridge で有名なところ) での製鉄で知られる Abraham Darby より90年近く早く、 まさにここから産業革命がスタートしたといってもよいのだそうだ。 これを契機にバーミンガムの人口も急増していくのだが、 バーミンガムの北東から北にかけてのエリアには工場が密集し、 排煙による汚染 （そしておそらく健康被害も） が深刻だったようだ。 いまでもこのエリアは、 これら煙突からの黒い煙に由来する Black Country なる呼で名で呼ばれている （いまはこれほどのことはない）。

なお、ウェブ検索の際はご注意。 Birmingham とひくと、 アメリカのアラバマ州にある Birmingham が出てくることもある。 あろうことか、 大学もある街らしい （いまざっと調べたところ University of Alabama at Birmingham だそうだが）。

Birmingham comes from old Anglo-Saxon dialect which means "home of Berm's family". The name, or the spelling of it, has been unstable until quite recently.

Even nowadays, there is a colloquial expression of "Brum", which is frequently seen on, for example, ads painted on the bus (like "Best xxx in Brum." or that sort of phrases). Brummie or Brummy are the adjective forms of the word. Probably, Bromwich in West Bromwich has the same meaning as Birmingham.

My dictionary stated that Brummie has "a very decorative imitation" or that sort of meaning, which is used solely in Australia. Related word, brummagem, has the similar meaning and is derived from Birmingham. This is because many imitations were manufactured in the area.

All these imply that the expansion of the city took place fairly recently. In fact, it was after the industrial revolution. The Doomsday Book of 1084 records "Bermingeham", with a population of only 60 and the value of the land and premises altogether of up to 20s. Even in the 16th century it was called "Birmingham Manor".

In around 1620, Dud Dudley succeeded in smelting iron using cokes near Halesowen. This was around 90 years earlier than Abraham Darby in Coalbrookdale, and heralds the beginning of the Industrial Revolution. This resulted in the very many factories, densely situated and badly polluted the north-eastern to northern area of Birmingham. Even now, the area is called Black Country, named after the black smoke that came from those chimneys.

If you would like to search the internet web pages, be careful not to confuse Birmingham, England with Birmingham in Alabama, USA. The town in Alabama even seems to have a university (University of Alabama at Birmingham).

位置、人口
Location and population

バーミンガムの場所は、 地図等やmultimap.comなどで調べていただければすぐわかると思う。 英国第2の都市で、 人口はおおよそ100万人ていどとされる。

バーミンガムのある州 (County) は、 West Midlands (ウェスト・ミッドランズ) だが、 何だかありがたみの薄い州名である。 文字通り England の中部の西の方なのではあるが、 ふつう州名というと Warwickshire とか Worcestershire とか、 何とか shire とつくのがふつうなのだが、 それに比べると West Midlands というのは、 新幹線の新しい駅名（例：安中榛名）や、 高速道路の入口名（例：日立南太田）みたいなすわりの悪さを感じる。 ということで調べてみたら、 West Midlands という州がつくられたのが1970年代なのだそうだ！

もともとバーミンガムは Warwickshire（ウォリックシャー州）に属していたようだ。 West Midlands のいくつかの市や町はもともと異なる County に属していて、 あまり West Midlands County としての一体感はないようである。 要するに、 周辺の村や町を吸収して急拡大した Birmingham に、 日本でいえば政令指定都市的な位置を与えるための改変だったのだろう。 その West Midlands County の人口は255万人程度。 面積は348 square miles (約900km²)、 人口密度は2800人/km²強、 となる。

West Midlands は County の名前としても使われているが、 この地区のいくつかの州の集合体を指すこともあるらしい。 具体的には Herefordshire, Worcestershire, Shropshire, Staffordshire, Warwickshire の各州と West Midlands をあわせたものだそうだ。 州の集合体としての West Midlands の人口は530万人程度とのこと。 面積は13,000km²強。 人口密度は400人/km²と低くなる。

Birmingham is the second largest city in the UK, with the population of around a million.

The county in which Birmingham is located is West Midlands. Strangely named, it is a quite new county, which seems to have been formed in the 1970s.

Birmingham originally was in Warwickshire. Cities in West Midlands County were originally part of different counties, and there does not seem to be a strong sense of unity here. I presume this reorganisation took place to give a special position to the city of Birmingham, which expanded amalgamating neighbouring towns and villages. The population of West Midlands County is 2.55 million, area 348 square miles (around 900km²), and population density 2800 per km².

West Midlands is now a county name, but is also used as the name of the wider area that involves a number of counties. In detail, Herefordshire, Worcestershire, Shropshire, Staffordshire, Warwickshire and West Midlands are the counties that is normally considered as part of it. This "greater West Midlands" has a population of 5.3 million, area of just a bit more than 13,000km², population density as low as 400 per km².
