Not a mere anachronismRecently, increasing number of people with the literary circle in Japan insist that Japanese word processors should be discarded especially for such activities like writing novels and poems. This is not an anachronism; it is closely related to the fact that Japanese language should cope with Kanji characters, which poses a problem interesting from both technical and linguistic points of view. The apparent difficulty of typing in wide variety of Kanji characters, the conversion mechanism is invented. An user will type in alphabet. Then it is converted with a very simple rule into Kana characters, the Japanese phonograms (some people key in Kana directly). Finally, the Kana characters are converted into Kanji by the conversion program. It guesses the meaning of the sentences input with Kana, and shows a candidate. Finally, the user looks through the converted Kanji, and make correction if necessary. Therefore, it is very different from word processors for people using languages written in alphabets. In such languages, input actions when using a word processor are not so different from a mechanical typewriter. However, it is completely different in Japanese. Especially, the wrong conversion by the program irritates the writer when he has to struggle deeply with the words. |
End of my poemsI used to write poems when I was in senior high school. However, I discontinued writing poems in 1986; it coincides with the days when I started using my own personal computer as a word processor! I quickly got used to it, and it did not take long before I was completely dependent when writing long texts. After that, I tried to write a poem using the word processor, and I found it impossible! |
Machine that makes "labor" exploit "words"My last poem written in 1986 was entitled as "Bathroom for Ladies". It is a poem of two men clearing a bathroom men cannot enter normally. In the poem, however, the men close down their mind and devote themselves into labor. The poem even makes me scared 14 years after it was written. I concluded the poem by making one of the men "switch off all the light, and let the bathroom go dark"; by that conclusion, I even killed my poem itself... The fact that I, who became a very experienced user of Japanese word processors, cannot write a poem after I wrote that poem of labor, indicates that word processors are machines to make "labor" exploit "words". I am now really scared of words and their power; we can never be careless of them. |
