Last updated 22 February 2003 Pontcysyllte Aqueduct - the side viewPhotograph taken on: 26 December 2001. The view of the famous Pontcysyllte Aqueduct, seen from the nearby farmland on the western side of the bridge. Completed in 1805, the bridge, 307-metre long, is said to be the first of the great works of the famous canal engineer Thomas Telford. It goes over the deep valley formed by River Dee, and consists of 19 spans of cast iron arches supported by tall stone bends. The farmland was covered by snow when I visited there.
