2001. 12. 25. / 25 December 2001

Trust myself, trust somebody

This year I moved from Japan to UK. It alone makes 2001 a year to remember for me. My thanks go to all those who were in charge to realise this. The startup of my life in the UK went quite well. Quoting a title of a slide in a PowerPoint presentation that Dr C J Goodman, my supervisor, and myself prepared for the seminar in London on 6 December, I would say: "So Far, So Good...".

However, it is of course too early to conclude something about my life in the UK, which is still an ongoing process. The most valuable experience this year should then be the process of preparation for the visit itself.

At first, I thought it was better and easier being in Japan. However, after many attempts that all ended up in vain, the only possibility left for me was to come to Birmingham. I have simply no words to express my gratefulness to the fact that the "last chance" was such a good environment in which to conduct research.

And, now that I am here I have the feeling that it will not be as hard as I have expected before leaving Japan. Regardless of the country, it is based on the same principle, with which I have been familiar since I was entitled as an academic researcher in Tokyo, and I just have to work and get the result...

So, this year I have learnt to trust myself who can go on with this way of life. At the same time, I have also learnt to trust whoever gives me support, without which I can never accomplish anything.

Year 2001 will soon be over, giving a big wave of change both to me and to the world. And, yes, whatever the next year sees, I will simply do my best!
